Tamil Nadu politics has entered one of its most dramatic phases in decades after the 2026 Assembly election delivered a fractured mandate. Actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party TVK emerged as the single largest political force in the state, but the numbers are still short of a clear majority.
For the first time in nearly 60 years, Tamil Nadu’s traditional two-party political structure led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam appears to be under serious pressure from a new political challenger.
The election has now moved from campaign speeches to intense backroom negotiations, support letters, alliance discussions and speculation over who will ultimately form the next government.
Since 1967, Tamil Nadu politics has largely revolved around two major Dravidian parties — DMK and AIADMK. Governments kept alternating between the two, creating a stable but highly competitive political environment.
The 2026 election completely disrupted that pattern.
TVK, led by Vijay, managed to attract large sections of young voters, first-time voters and people frustrated with both established Dravidian parties. Political observers are calling it the biggest political disruption in Tamil Nadu since M. G. Ramachandran formed AIADMK in 1972.
Many analysts are even comparing Vijay’s political rise to the emergence of J. Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu politics.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly has a total of 234 seats.
To form the government, a party or alliance requires majority support of 118 seats.

After the results, Vijay met the Tamil Nadu Governor and staked claim to form the government.
However, reports suggest that the Governor has asked TVK to provide formal letters of support from additional MLAs before any swearing-in ceremony can be approved.
Under India’s constitutional framework, the Governor appoints the Chief Minister, but in a hung assembly situation, proof of majority becomes critical.
Because no alliance crossed the majority mark before the election, the Governor is expected to follow constitutional conventions and Supreme Court guidelines while deciding whom to invite first.

In such situations, four possibilities usually emerge:
If an alliance formed before elections gets majority support, it is invited first.
The largest party can form government if it secures outside support from other MLAs.
Parties may join hands after elections to cross the majority mark.
A smaller government can survive if external parties support it during confidence votes.
Right now, Tamil Nadu appears to be moving through the second and third possibilities.
One of the biggest twists came after reports that Congress may support TVK instead of continuing with DMK.
Congress had fought the election in alliance with DMK, making the sudden political shift highly controversial.
DMK leaders reportedly described the move as “betrayal” and accused Congress of abandoning a long-standing alliance for political convenience.
The controversy became sharper after Congress leader Karti Chidambaram publicly hinted at support for a secular government led by TVK.
This development has raised concerns inside the INDIA bloc because regional parties may now question Congress’ reliability as an ally.
The political uncertainty is not limited to DMK alone.
Inside AIADMK, several MLAs are reportedly divided over whether the party should support TVK to keep DMK out of power.
